Linen has no memory. It does not ease, it does not hold a pressed line for long, and it keeps every needle mark permanently — an unpicked seam leaves a scar that will not steam out. It also moves after washing, so a garment measured before its first wash is not quite the same garment afterwards. Light silks and voiles are equally unforgiving. Alterations in these cloths have to be right the first time, which means measuring more and cutting less.
