Venice is about thirty-three miles south of the atelier — forty-five minutes on I-75 without trouble, longer along US-41. It is a considered trip rather than an errand, and the work that justifies it tends to be the kind that cannot simply be redone.
Venice was laid out to a single plan drawn by the city planner John Nolen in 1926, and enough of that plan survives that the town still reads as a piece of the twenties. Something similar is true of a good deal of what people bring us from here.

Old cloth behaves differently: silk turns brittle, dyes shift unevenly, and the holes left by original stitching never entirely close. Sometimes a piece can be restored to wear. Sometimes it can only be stabilised and kept. Sometimes the right answer is to take one element — the lace, the buttons, a single panel — and carry it into something new. Sometimes, and sometimes not — that judgement is the first part of the work. Aged silk and old seam lines limit what can be moved without damage. We examine the piece in person and explain what is possible, what is risky, and what we would advise against, before agreeing to anything.
