Clothing Alterations & Tailoring
in Osprey, Florida
Alterations for Osprey Clients
Osprey sits on US-41 between Sarasota and Venice, about twenty miles south of the atelier. Thirty to thirty-five minutes on an ordinary day, either up the Trail or across to I-75.
One particular kind of garment reaches us from this stretch of coast more than any other: the dress worn to somebody else's wedding. Mothers of the bride and of the groom, grandmothers, and guests holding a formal invitation and a dress that is nearly but not quite right.
The hardest dress in the room
A mother-of-the-bride dress has more to satisfy than the bridal gown does. It has to photograph well beside the gown without competing with it, stay comfortable through a ceremony and a long reception, and suit a body the wearer knows extremely well and has firm opinions about. Sleeves and necklines are usually where the work sits — coverage that looks deliberate rather than added afterwards. It is the alteration clients are most anxious about, and the one most often left too late.

Questions from Osprey
Do you alter mother-of-the-bride and formal guest dresses?
Frequently. Sleeve additions and adjustments, neckline changes, bust and waist shaping, hem and lining work. Bring the shoes and, if you have them, the undergarments you intend to wear — both change the fit more than people expect.
